Pressure-induced phase transitions in iron-filled carbon nanotubes: X-ray diffraction studies
نویسندگان
چکیده
High-pressure x-ray-diffraction studies have been carried out upto 20 GPa on iron-filled multiwalled carbon nanotubes ~MWNTs!. The pressure dependence of the intertubular spacing d0 of the filled MWNTs shows a sharp change at 9 GPa which is not observed in pristine MWNTs. The iron present as nanowires inside the MWNT is in the form of a-Fe and Fe3C. Both of these phases show higher compressibility than their bulk form. Most interestingly, the structural modification of MWNTs at 9 GPa coincides with an iso-structural phase transition in the encapsulated Fe3C, in sharp contrast to the absence of a transition in the bulk Fe3C upto 70 GPa.

Pressure-induced transformations in deep mantle and core minerals
Recent experimental and theoretical studies provide new insight into the variety of high-pressure transformations in minerals that comprise the Earth’s deep mantle and core. Representative examples of reconstructive, displacive, electronic and magnetic transformations studied by new diamond-anvil cell techniques are examined. Despite reports for various transitions in (Mg,Fe)SiO3-perovskite, th...

We reviewed structural phase transitions in crystalline materials, especially recent simulations and experiments on the shock-induced transitions in iron. They both confirmed a phase transition wave in the picosecond to nanosecond time scale, inferred previously from wave profile analyses. The nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation suggests modification of pair potentials from temperature...
متن کاملElectron Irradiation Induced Structural Changes in Nickel Nanorods Encapsulated in Carbon Nanotubes
Nickel nanorods encapsulated inside the multiwalled carbon nanotubes were prepared using microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) technique. The as prepared tubes were investigated by scanning electron microcopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). HRTEM study of these tubes exhibits long, good crystalline nickel filled CNTs with...
متن کاملA quenchable superhard carbon phase synthesized by cold compression of carbon nanotubes.
A quenchable superhard high-pressure carbon phase was synthesized by cold compression of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes were placed in a diamond anvil cell, and x-ray diffraction measurements were conducted to pressures of approximately 100 GPa. A hexagonal carbon phase was formed at approximately 75 GPa and preserved at room conditions. X-ray and transmission electron microscopy electron d...
متن کاملThe Effect of Time on the Formation & Growth of Passive Layer on Carbon Steel A516 Gr. 70 in Sour Water
A proposed method for protecting carbon steel and hence reducing iron release in an aqueous solution saturated with H2S is presented in this paper. The method is based on forming a stable and resistant sulfide layer (pyrite, FeS2, or pyrrhotite, Fe(1-x)S, phase or a mixture of both) on the carbon steel surface. The study on the formation of the sulfide layer was...
